Both graduate academic and undergraduate medical degrees are available in psychiatry.
Admission to a graduate degree requires a previous undergraduate degree with an average of at least B+ in the last 2 years of study. A GRE score is not required. A thesis supervisor must be identified prior to final admission.
Admission to the MD program requires completion of a previous undergraduate degree (with an average of at least B; applicants with higher averages are more likely to be admitted), with the inclusion of certain courses. Some schools do not require the completion of a previous undergraduate degree but at least completion of 3 years. Pertinent courses include biological sciences, physical sciences, and humanities or social sciences. Usually a course in statistics is required for admission. An MCAT (medical college admission test) score may be required.
Generally, students who are in their final year of medical training are automatically eligible for residency training.
