Many parasitologists focus their research on medical parasites of humans and livestock, such as the interaction between host and parasitic disease organisms with a view to controlling infection by these organisms. They examine aspects ranging from the cellular mechanisms of infection, the immune response of the host, immunosuppression mechanisms used by parasites to assist infection, and the epidemiology of parasitic diseases.
Common diseases studied include toxoplasmosis, giardiasis, and cryptosporidiosis, as these causes serious diseases when transmitted to immunocompromised individuals such as transplant, cancer, or HIV patients. Researchers are studying ways to genetically manipulate these organisms to reduce their harmful affects, through a combination of approaches in molecular immunology, genomics, and genetics.
Other scientists focus on the molecular genetics and mechanisms of resistance to antiparasitic drugs, the mechanisms of action of these pharmaceuticals and parasite control. Drug resistance in veterinary parasites has become a major problem in many parts of the world. A substantial part of current research is to better understand the basis of drug resistance in important nematode parasites of livestock and to develop new tools for monitoring the development of drug resistance.
