Prerequisites for Graduate Studies in Nutritional Sciences |
Admission to a Master's-level program (MSc or MHSc) requires an undergraduate degree in a biological or allied health science. Some schools require the undergraduate degree to contain a research project component (eg. via an honor's degree or directed study). A minimum average of B+ to A- is expected during the last 2 years of the previous undergraduate degree.
Transfer to a PhD program is usually allowed after 1 year in a Master's-level program. Some students can be admitted directly to the PhD program from an undergraduate degree provided they demonstrate a superior ability to undertake advanced research work.
As all graduate programs require a supervisor, some schools require this person to be approved prior to final admission.
McMaster University also offers an MD program in pediatric nutrition and exercise. At least 3 years of a previous undergraduate degree is required for admission to the MD program with an overall average of B. Completion of relevant courses such as biology or chemistry is considered an asset, rounded out with several humanities and social sciences courses. Additionally, the MCAT (medical college admission test) must be written. A score of at least 6 in the Verbal Reasoning component is required.
Generally, students who are in their final year of medical training are automatically eligible for residency training.
