Classical research into nuclear reactor physics, neutrons, and radiation physics is still ongoing. This includes investigations into the reliability and safety assessment for safety-critical systems, maintenance strategy determination, networked control systems, sensor networks, and embedded systems.
Research into corrosion focuses mainly on designing structures to contain nuclear waste materials. This includes the actual design of said containers, as well as investigations into the consequences of long-term storage of this material, the underlying geology of the area, and leakage issues.
There is also government interest in current research into the potential hazards from terrorist use of radiological dispersal devices. This includes improving detection techniques of radiological materials on aircraft, at land borders, and ocean ports. Research is also being conducted on radiation-based methods for looking through walls and pipes by generating images. These types of research often take place in collaboration with law enforcement and security officials.
