Most people with a degree in nephrology will work in a hospital environment, working with patients in a variety of areas. This includes surgery (for renal transplantation), critical care (post-transplantation), and in dialysis. They can also work in the laboratory (either in a university research environment, or in the pharmaceutical industry), developing new drugs for various renal diseases such as hypertension and lupus, or immunosuppressant transplant drugs.
Nephrologists can also work in nursing homes or do in-house visits for home dialysis patients.
