Prerequisites for Graduate Studies in Mental Health

Many schools offer graduate certificates in mental health studies. Students must have completed an undergraduate degree in a related field such as psychology or psychiatry.

University of Toronto offers a Master's program in mental health studies. To be admitted, students must have an undergraduate degree in public health, nursing, or a related regulated health profession. A medical degree is also acceptable. Relevant professional experience, as a public health, community or clinical practitioner, is an asset.

Admission to an MD program in mental health studies (UBC and U of T) requires an undergraduate degree with at least a B average, with the completion of courses such as biological sciences, physical sciences, and humanities or social sciences. Usually a course in statistics is required for admission. An MCAT (medical college admission test) score may be required.

Generally, students who are in their final year of medical training are automatically eligible for residency training.

In many cases, due to the potentially sensitive nature of the programs, students may be subject to a police record check.
