Marine engineers are in demand in a variety of ocean applications, where they are often at sea for months at a time. They are employed on offshore platforms, where they perform a wide array of functions such as routine maintenance of the platform components, drilling for oil, the laying of fiber optic cables, and designing engineering fixes to common platform problems.
They can also work on ships as Marine Engineer Officers, where they are responsible for the maintenance and operation of propulsion, electrical, lighting, and water systems aboard the vessel.
Marine engineers can also work in private industry on land, where they design ships and the machinery that goes inside (nuclear reactors, steam engines, diesel engines, etc.). This work typically takes place in collaboration with mechanical and structural engineers. They can also work as port security for public entities.
A career in research is also possible, by those who get a career in academia or with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), where they teach ocean and marine engineering while at the same time performing research into new technologies for the marine and ocean industries.
