Students take initial courses designed to introduce them to basic engineering concepts. This includes applied chemistry, statistics, economics, industrial design processes, manufacturing control systems, and CAD.
Manufacturing-engineering-specific courses are designed to teach students the fundamentals of manufacturing. This includes stress analysis and design, fluid mechanics, and the principles of engineering materials. Students also learn about the production and manufacturing of materials, vibrations and acoustics, measurements and controls, and the modeling and analysis of manufacturing systems. Advanced technologies such as robots, computer controlled machine tools, automation, mechatronics, production control methods, and analysis of manufacturing systems and processes are emphasized.
Manufacturing engineering students also take management courses designed to round out their education and prepare them for the manufacturing business environment. This includes courses in human resource planning and control, problem solving and decision-making, and the technology of international finance.
In addition to classroom lectures, a large portion of the curriculum is done in a laboratory environment to simulate workplace manufacturing situations. Tours of manufacturing operations are also offered.
