Inorganic Chemistry Research Areas and Disciplines

Inorganic chemistry research ranges from the purely theoretical to the practical.

Researchers are developing methods to recover metals from waste streams, analyzing the composition of mined ores, and performing research on the use of inorganic chemicals for treating soils. As well, inorganic chemistry research is leading to the improvement of formulas for household cleansers. The manufacturing of fertilizers is another practical application of industrial inorganic chemistry. As well, researchers are combining the elements of chemical synthesis with materials engineering and catalysis science to develop better catalysts (more selective, more active, longer lived) for industrial use, as well as developing new routes for the preparation of rare-earth aluminates as buffer layers for high-temperature superconductors

Scientists are also conducting fundamental research related to the synthesis and characterization of nanoscopic materials Applied research in this field includes the applications of nanomaterials for radiation sensing, catalysts for fuel cells, radioactive tracers for medical imaging, novel electrodes for energy storage, and sensing devices for biological agents.

Inorganic chemistry research is also being used for biological purposes. For example, novel methods for the analysis of trace chromium in blood and urine have been a focus of recent work, as chromium can be used as a low-cost dietary supplement and is used in the treatment of diabetes.
