Research into leukemia and other types of blood cancer is quite common due to funding from both private and government sources. Current topics of research include the biochemical basis of leukemia, manifestation, early detection, management of the disease, treatment options, and the bioethics of end-of-life care.
Other research includes topics such as transfusions: the creation of artificial blood, improving on transfusion practices, and management of post-transfusion issues. Transfusion of umbilical cord blood, containing stem cells, is also actively researched for its potential to aid in treatment of various blood and genetic diseases.
Bone marrow transplantation is another hot research topic, due to its potential uses for treating a multitude of disorders such as leukemia, anemia, HIV, sickle cell disease, Hodgkin's disease, and various solid tumor cancers. Research into improving technique and screening patients is ongoing, as well as public-health campaigns to promote donating blood and bone marrow.
Other areas of research include venous thrombosis (detection and prevention) and hemophilia (genetics and management).
