Family Medicine Research Areas and Disciplines |
Family medicine research is research done by family doctors and researchers about clinical practice. As such, family medical doctors carry out research during the course of their interactions with patients. Currently, research into enhancing the quality of primary care (eg. cancer follow-up care, maternity care, chronic disease management) and health services (eg. palliative care, immigrant services) is underway. Patients are often recruited into studies, with their consent, and the results of these studies are used to improve family medical procedures and techniques.
Other types of non-clinical research include understanding how patients, families, and communities deal with health and illness; improving doctor-patient communication; and studying the impact of information technology on healthcare.
