What is Equity Studies?Equity studies (also called human rights or social justice studies) is the study of the basic rights and freedoms attributed to humans regardless of nationality, sex, national or ethnic origin, race, religion, language, or other status. These rights may exist as natural or legal rights, in both national and international law. Human rights in international practice, within international law, in the policies of states, and the activities of non-governmental organizations has been a cornerstone of public policy around the world.
Human rights can be classified and organised in a number of different ways, at an international level the most common categorisation of human rights has been to split them into civil and political rights, and economic, social and cultural rights. Advances of technology, medicine, and philosophy have resulted in new issues in environmental rights, lesbian and gay rights, fetal rights, and reproductive rights.
Sexual diversity studies and women's studies are often also linked with equity studies and human rights, and many schools cross-pollinate between these disciplines. However equity studies focuses more on issues not necessarily related to sexuality or to gender specifically, but to issues such as class and ethnicity.
