Students taking an undergraduate degree in entomology start off with general biology courses such as zoology, genetics, ecology, and statistics. Introductory courses in insect diversity and invertebrate anatomy and physiology are taught, where students learn about the inner workings of insects and begin to familiarize themselves with the various insect families. Students study insect pathology, agricultural entomology, forest entomology, and medical and veterinary entomology.
Many courses include a hands-on component such as laboratory session, field trips, and insect collecting. Students learn how to capture and preserve insects, how to handle living insects, and how to dissect insects for pathological work.
Students in a graduate program already have the necessary background in entomology, and specialize in a particular topic of interest. Students work independently on a research topic that may include laboratory or field work. Seminars are part of the graduate curriculum and students are expected to partake and contribute to the seminar series, where they get to evaluate advances in entomology and report on their thesis progress.
