Given that distributed computing relies on multiple computers, researchers are working on ways to make computers communicate more effectively amongst each other. This includes improving bandwith and processing speeds of individual computers. Such people often work with software programmers and Internet specialists.
An example of a current distributed computing project is the At Home project of the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence. SETI uses the processing power of over five million home computers (running a piece of software while the computer is idle) to utilize computational power far in excess of even the greatest supercomputers. This computing power is used to analyze signals from space for signs of intelligence.
Another example of current research into distributed computing is the design and development of file sharing or live streaming, using peer-to-peer technology. These people are working to enable faster sharing of graphic and audio information, both through the downloading of files, and also through live streaming utilizing the Internet.
