Since dental hygiene tends to focus on preventative care, most research is in bettering current practices and implementing new procedures. For example, researchers are studying ways to improve the oral health of the elderly in long-term care facilities since they often lack the dexterity to perform daily brushings. This involves the training of staff to perform these procedures and education about the importance of good oral hygiene to help prevent other medical issues.
Others are looking at the links between periodontal disease and systemic conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. These researchers are working to elucidate the links and ways to mitigate periodontal disease in those with underlying medical conditions. This includes education about proper brushing and flossing regimes and the importance of regular checkups.
Other researchers are working with those in public health to examine the oral healthcare disparities of those such as ethic minorities and aboriginals. They are working to increase cultural competency in health education so they can understand the cultural issues that may be preventing such people from seeking oral (or general medical) care.
