Studying Bioresource Engineering in Canada

Students initially study generally engineering principles including physics and math. Students are encouraged to specialize in one area such as environmental, soil and water, ecological, or food engineering.

Environmental engineering courses include biochemistry and microbiology, geomatics, hydrology, waste management, and engineering for land development. Students learn how to design products that minimize their impact on the environment, and the social and political impacts of technologies.

Soil and water engineering courses include soil physics, soil mechanics, and soil microbiology. They learn about the physical and biological makeup of various types of soils, and learn how these are used in agricultural practices. They also learn about drainage and irrigation issues, and design products that will mitigate these issues.

Ecological engineering courses include soil physics and microbiology, and the environmental aspects of technology. Non-science courses in law, ethics, and business are also offered.

Food engineering courses focus on food science, biochemistry, and microbiology. Students learn how to recognize and culture bacterial growth that are of use to agriculturalists. Most courses are laboratory-based.
