Biodiversity Research Areas and Disciplines

A major goal of biodiversity research is to identify, describe, and classify species, and to determine how a species is determined. Researchers are developing methods to discriminate species, to determine divergence points, and to study how organisms have evolved.

Research into genetic diversity examines the differences among genomes to reveal historical processes that shape the genome, such as polyploidization, horizontal gene transfer, and hybridization. Researchers use bioinformatics alongside experiments and theory to study how genomes evolve, how species originate, and how novel traits arise.

Scientists are also studying indicator species and identifying critical habitats in order to develop conservation policies. They are exploring how species and communities respond to altered environmental conditions and how populations are able to keep apace of environmental change. Given that many species are at risk due to environmental contaminants, many researchers are studying species to determine geographic areas containing elevated levels of contaminants such as mercury.
