Biochemistry Research Areas and Disciplines |
Most research in biochemistry takes place in various university and biotechnology laboratories. Various schools in Canada cover topics such as gene expression, cell communication, macromolecular structure, bioinformatics, and molecular medicine. Many private and government research centers are affiliated with various universities; as such biochemical research is often interdisciplinary in nature, including aspects of physiology, biotechnology, mathematics, and physics.
Basic biochemical research is still ongoing, in the form of the synthesis and development of novel organic compounds. These can perhaps be used in the future for drug applications, new types of plastics, and perhaps even to create artificial organic life.
Nutrition is another important area of biochemistry research. Biochemists study the biochemistry of food, as well as how it is used in the body. New food processes can be tested to see any impacts they have on the nutritional quality of the food product, and new ideas for how to meet special nutritional needs can be devised. Biochemists are working with geneticists and food scientists to come up with better-quality, better-tasting foods for both human and animal consumption.
Biochemists also work with toxicologists to do research into environmental and medical toxicology. See the article on toxicology for more information on this research.
