Prerequisites for Graduate Studies in Applied Mathematics

To get into a Master's-level applied mathematics program, students must have completed an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline such as mathematics, statistics, or applied mathematics, with at least a B+ average. Industry or work experience is an asset. To get into a PhD program, students must have a Master's-level degree in applied mathematics. Some schools will allow direct entry via a completed undergraduate degree, provided the student has a sufficiently high average (A-) and an aptitude for research. In all cases the graduate supervisor must be chosen prior to final admission.

Admission to Dalhousie's graduate-level program in engineering mathematics requires a previous degree in a related discipline (eg. engineering, mathematics, statistics) with a minimum B+ average. Previous experience in applied mathematics, either via co-op, directed studies, or related industry experience, is considered an asset.

Admission to their PhD program can either be directly from an undergraduate degree in a related subject, provided the academic marks are sufficient and research ability has been demonstrated, or after acquiring a relevant Master's-level degree. Dalhousie requires a supervisor to be chosen prior to final admission for both the Master's and PhD programs.
