Walters State Community College was established in 1970 and operates from three satellite campuses apart from its main campus. It is a part of the Tennessee Board of Regents system and is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. They are trained to conduct extensive legal research in all fields especially computer aided Internet research such as Westlaw and Lexis. They are also trained in drafting documents, pleadings etc. They are also trained in Torts, contracts law, Real estate law, domestic relationship, wills estate and trusts, criminal litigation procedures etc. The legal externship provides them with experience in learning the role of a paralegal. Successful graduates seek employment in law offices, corporations, government agencies, insurance firms, banks and real estate and title companies. They have to work under the direct supervision of an attorney.
