Oakland University was established in 1959 as the Michigan State University - Oakland. It offers about 115 baccalaureate degree programs and 90 graduate degree and certificate programs. It has five professional schools that offer several programs which consist of the Schools of Business Administration, Education and Human Services, Engineering and Computer Science, Health Sciences, and Nursing and the College of Arts and Sciences. More than 90% of the faculty have a Doctorate's degree in their respective fields of study and the class sizes are small enabling students get due attention. It has an outstanding library with nearly 719,000 volumes, 1.1 million microfilms, 3,500 periodicals as well as several computers workstations. Oakland University’s Paralegal Program consists of 13-courses with nine core courses and three legal specialty courses as well as an 80 hour internship. Students may opt to specialize in litigation, business or estate administration. The programs are offered during day, evenings as well as on weekends. The nine required core courses include Introduction to the Law, Substantive Law-Contracts, Substantive Law-Torts, Introduction to Accounting, Legal Research and Writing I, Legal Research & Writing II, CALR, Litigation I: Case Preparation Before Trial and Litigation II: Case Preparation Before Trial. The American Bar Association has approved these courses. The students can select courses such as Litigation III: Anatomy of a Lawsuit, Real Property Transactions, Business Organizations, Contract Administration, Employment Law, Estate Planning and Documents, Probate Administration, Taxation of Estates and Trusts, Introduction to Medical Terminology and Records, Auto Accident Law and Cases, Family Law, Patent, Copyright & Trademark Law, Bankruptcy and Collections, Criminal Law, Immigration Law and Ethics/Internship. Students may take up two additional specialty courses to avoid an internship program. It also offers professional development courses in Paralegal studies to help those in the legal field broaden their knowledge without pressure by taking up audited courses.
