It offers programs through day, evening, weekend and online classes for the convenience of students. The legal assistant training program offered by El Centro College is an Associate of Applied Sciences Degree in Paralegal Studies. It has been created to prepare students to perform the job of a paralegal under the supervision of an attorney at a law office. It does not qualify a graduate to take a bar exam, represent clients in court or give legal advice. This Associates degree currently consists of fourteen paralegal courses and seven general education core curriculum courses. Each course is a sixteen-week semester-length course that is offered during the fall and spring. El Cento College first offered the program in 1975 after being sanctioned by the Texas Education Agency. It is fully approved by the American Bar Association. The curriculum of the course consists of a mix of legal theory, principles, procedures, practical applications and production of legal documents. Students learn legal vocabulary, importance of attention to detail, ethical responsibilities and the significance of continuing education. They are provided internships to make them familiar with the workings of a legal office.
