Bergen Community Collegeis based in the city of Paramus in New Jersey. It was established in 1965 and currently has more than 14,000 students on its rolls. The Paralegal Studies program of the college is being offered since 1978. It is a two year Associate of Applied Science degree which is divided into four semesters. Day as well as evening classes are available. Facilities for students include a law library with over 3000 volumes of Federal and New Jersey law. Students are trained to use WESTLAW and LEXIS – two computer assisted legal research databases. They are also provided an internship to give them work experience. This Bergen Community College course is fully approved by the American Bar Association. The faculty consists of New Jersey attorneys with a minimum of 10 years experience. Students are trained in the techniques of legal research, practice and procedure, motions and pleadings, investigation, interviewing and drafting of documents. They are also given training in legal ethics, professional responsibility, communication skills, general education and basic computer typing and research skills. The course has a total of around 65 credit hours. Course content has been created keeping in mind the specific needs of the legal community. After graduation from Bergen Community College, students have the option of entering domains such as public law, private law and corporate law. They are employed as paralegals, legal assistants and legal nurse consultants.
