On Thursday, September 29, 2005, more than 20 Saint Mary's students and SMUSA members hit the streets of south end Halifax to launch a week-long Community Clothing Drive. Equipped with clear recycling bags donated by Sobeys, information about the Clothing Drive, and window cards supporting the University's Pride in Our Shared Neighbourhood community relations program, the students canvassed homes throughout the immediate area. Adam Lordon, SMUSA Volunteer Coordinator, stated that the clothing drive is the first in a series of student-led philanthropic initiatives that is being planned for the year. "The SMUSA Community Clothing Drive will be one of many initiatives whereby Saint Mary's students will go out into our community to actively give back," said Lordon. "We will be looking to strengthen our relationships with our neighbours while making a difference in the lives of others." The students will see the results of their efforts on October 3 and 4 when they return to the households to pick up donations. They have also set up donation bins on the Saint Mary's campus in the Dockside Cafeteria and at the SMUSA Information Desk in the Student Centre. The bins will be in place until October 6. Lordon stated that all clothing collected by SMUSA will be donated to Hand in Hand Outreach, a Halifax-based charity. Hand in Hand Outreach will sell the clothing for a low suggested donation or, in many cases, give it away.
