The university held a special naming ceremony attended by many past and present members of the board of governors as well as staff, faculty, students and community members. The three-storey/four-storey residence, located in the northeast corner of the university's campus, will be home to 226 students. It features a design similar to Nipissing's existing residences, with suite-style apartments shared by four students. Each student has their own private bedroom and shares a common living room, kitchen and bathroom area with their suite mates. Every room has a telephone and is wired for the Internet. As Governors House is located at the top of College Drive, the rooms on the upper floors feature a stunning view of Lake Nipissing as well as the university campus and trail system. Combined with the existing Founders House, Chancellors House and townhouse residences, the construction of the $11.1 million Governors House gives Nipissing University residence beds for 1,007 students. "I'm very pleased with the decision to name this beautiful new residence in honour of our board. They are a deeply committed group of skilled individuals who give their time and energy freely to ensure the success of this institution," said university president Dr. Dennis Mock. "It is a fitting recognition as this residence overlooks the entire campus, a literal representation of the Board's role in guiding the university. I only wish I had my office on the top floor of Governors House so I could enjoy that wonderful view." "On behalf of Nipissing's student body and the residents of Governors House, I'd like to thank the university for building this spectacular new residence and to the Board of Governors for their commitment and leadership," said Jesse Wright, a fourth-year student and Governors House Don. "Speaking on behalf of all past and present members of the Nipissing University Board of Governors, it is a tremendous honour for us to be recognized in this fashion," said current Board Chair Steve Carmichael. "Each one of us is dedicated to the university and its success and by providing excellent housing for our students this residence is a key component to Nipissing's future growth, as well as its present. I hope the students will have the time of their lives while living here."
