More than 1,000 people will attend the competition, hosted by the SIFE (Students In Free Enterprise) organization. "This is a competition where the best business-minded students gather from around the world," says Bruce Nasby, SIFE executive vice president, programs. "It's fascinating to see different cultures unite together with the shared goal of making a positive impact on their communities." SIFE is a global non-profit organization that mobilizes university students to create economic opportunity for others while discovering their own potential. SIFE students form teams on their university campuses and develop outreach projects that teach entrepreneurship, market economics, business ethics and finance in their communities. At the 2005 SIFE World Cup, the top SIFE teams in the world will present the results of their outreach projects to determine which teams made the most impact on their communities. At the national competition in May 2005, ACE Laurier was named "2005 SIFE National Champions" and also won the "Most Enterprising Campus in Canada" award. This is the third consecutive year that Laurier has won each award. To win the SIFE title, ACE Laurier used innovative methods to teach high school students the concepts of supply and demand. They developed a business simulation that made the students managers of their own fictional hockey teams. The participants were provided player statistics and budgets then challenged to draft a complete team in an auction-like format while staying within their budgets. The students learned about supply and demand as they competed with one another for a limited number of superstar players. Business executives from 30 countries, including some of the world's top CEOs, will judge the competition. The winner will be named 2005 SIFE World Cup Champion on October 7, 2005. The competition will be web cast via a link on www.sife.org. Steve Farlow, Executive Director of the Schlegel Centre for Entrepreneurship is the team's Faculty Advisor.
