Finding himself among the top ten lecturers in Ontario is an accomplishment in itself, considering the selection process began about a year ago when TVO challenged Ontario students to identify the best lecturers in universities and colleges throughout the province. Having previously shortlisted the 258 nominations to 30, the judges further narrowed the group to 10 representing six universities in Ontario . The top 10 professors were selected by the jury according to three criteria: clarity and coherence; energy and performance; and confidence and authority. Dr. Persinger, who arrived at Laurentian University in 1971, is the Director of the Behavioural Neuroscience Program and is a professor of psychology and neuroscience. During those 30 years, he has taught two dozen different courses. Spanning from the unexplained (paranormal events) to the neural behaviour and into the depths of the human mind, students describe the experience of sitting in on his lectures as unique and thought provoking. The recipient of the 1989 Laurentian University's Research Excellence Award, is considered by many as one of the leading researchers in neuroscience behaviour. A strong believer in involving students in his research, Dr. Persinger has enabled many of them to attain a personal development that would otherwise not have occurred. His many hours spent to developing their statistical ability and inspiring them to question, seek and answer have lead to significant success for many students. Under his guidance, many Laurentian students have taken part in Dr. Persinger's research in areas such as quantum physics theories of entanglement, belief systems and the sensed presence, multiple sclerosis, mild head injuries, epilepsy, maternal behaviour and geomagnetic correlates of biological systems. When nominating Dr. Persinger for the Best Lecturer Competition, Laurentian students highlighted this professor's passion for learning and teaching, his range of knowledge, and his constant desire to update his course material. Dr. Persinger is also appreciated for being able to motivate students and to instill knowledge and passion in his students. All ten finalists will deliver their lecture on TVO's Big Ideas – two lectures a week for five weeks, beginning Saturday, October 8, at 1 p.m. and repeated the following day at the same time. Dr. Persinger's lectured will be aired on Saturday, October 29, at 1 p.m. , and on Sunday, October 30, at 1 p.m. Following each broadcast, viewers can "grade" the professors over the phone at 1 (866) 281-3536 or on-line at www.tvo.org/bigideas.
