Engineers: professionals willing to meet society's greater challenges

Engineering: a profession, a passion!

The Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science of Concordia University and the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) are proud to present the third annual "Engineering: a profession, a passion!" conference on September 28 and 29, 2005, in room H-110 of Concordia University's Henry F. Hall Building (1455 de Maisonneuve Blvd. West, Montreal).

This event is meant to be a meeting but also an opportunity for dialogue between engineering students and the engineering community. "The Concordia Engineer gains all the tools of basic knowledge, technologies and practical industrial experiences. But on top of that, through events like the Concordia/OIQ Fair, the Concordia Engineer learns and participates in discussions on the fundamental values of the engineering profession and its practice," explained Dr. Nabil Esmail, Eng., Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science at Concordia University.

Dr. Sami Bebawi, Eng., Executive Vice President, SNC Lavalin Group and Guy A. Bourassa, Eng., partner, Hatch Ltd. will present their respective career paths to students since both are perfect examples of engineering careers that target excellence and respect the fundamental values of the engineering profession. These are competency, ethics, social commitment and responsibility.

Engineering students are also invited to attend the discussion panels entitled "The engineer's professionalism" and "Sustainable Development: The Engineer's Contribution." "It is essential for engineering students to be knowledgeable of these subjects," said Dr. Gaétan Samson, Eng., President of the OIQ, because the next generation of engineers must adapt its engineering practice in accordance with society's greater challenges while respecting human beings and their environment."

"The engineers of tomorrow must use their skills to serve society while keeping in mind the importance of the politics of sustainable development," added Dr. Claude Lajeunesse, Eng., President of Concordia University.
