Droves of students, faculty and staff turned out for the tug-of-war and barbeque which was held at The Tower. The Saint Mary's Business Development Centre is heading up the Campus Campaign this year. Also, this year Dr. J. Colin Dodds, President of Saint Mary's, and Chuck Bridges, Vice-President (Assoc.) of External Affairs at Saint Mary's, are serving on the United Way Campaign Management Team for the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). Dr. Dodds is Chair of the Post- Secondary Sector, while Bridges will serve as Executive Chair of the Post-Secondary Sector. "Saint Mary's knows all about giving back to our community," says Dr. Dodds. "For over 200 years, our faculty, staff, students and alumni have always known the importance of supporting the community, and it is in this spirit that we will continue supporting the United Way of Halifax Campaign," he added. Catherine J. Woodman, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the United Way of Halifax Region, indicates that the goal this year is to raise $5.3 million. "We are fully confident that we can reach this year's goal, and the reason for this stems from the fact that our loyal supporters, like Saint Mary's, have always been here to support the United Way of Halifax Region and help our community grow in so many ways," she says. One of the big highlights from today's launch was the tug-of-war match between varsity athletes at Saint Mary's, captained by University President, Dr. Dodds, and the student, faculty and staff team, captained by the Huskies Mascot. Dr. Dodds' team won the friendly and fun-filled match. United Way of Halifax Region is recognized across Canada as a leader in community building. In addition to raising funds, coordinating volunteer time and skills, and bringing people and organizations together, United Way invests in agencies and neighbourhoods to make a measurable difference in our community. The areas of focus support young children and families, foster individual well-being and self-sufficiency, increase safety in homes and neighbourhoods and strengthen the voluntary sector. Saint Mary's University is known for its community outreach projects, both in Canada and around the world.
