September 22, 2005 Source: Universit of Windsor: http://www.uwindsor.ca/units/pac/newsrel.nsf/f8e26b1a592c9edb8525676a0048614a/17f6fd01f60f6017852570840069435c!OpenDocument Alumni Association to recognize sports greats at Hall of Fame ceremony (WINDSOR, ONTARIO, SEPTEMBER 22, 2005) – The University of Windsor’s Alumni Association will recognize this year’s Sports Hall of Fame inductees with ceremonies this Saturday, September 24, 1:30 p.m. in Ambassador Auditorium, CAW Student Centre, on the University of Windsor campus. 2005 Alumni Association Sports Hall of Fame inductees include: Morgan Clark (‘69, ‘75), to be inducted into the Administrator/Builder/Coach category. Clark was an accomplished high school and university basketball and football player in his high school days and went on to play professional football in the Canadian Football League. He began the intramural football program at Assumption University and served as an assistant coach for the University of Windsor Lancers football team for nearly 30 years. Clark has had a 34-year teaching career in Windsor and Essex County and has coached high school and AKO football. He officiated basketball throughout his career, has been a track and field starter for 43 years and continues his involvement in university track meets. (Keith) O’Brian Gibbons (‘95), to be inducted into the Athlete category. Gibbons was a member of the Men’s Lancer Track and Field team throughout his university career and holds the school record in 60 metres, 300 metres, 4 x 200 metres, 4 x 400 metres and was a three-time Olympic Shield winner as the University of Windsor’s top athlete. He was recognized four times as Most Valuable Player for track and field and led his team to five consecutive OUA Championship Team titles. Among other accomplishments, Gibbons was a five-time All-Canadian; competed at the Commonwealth Games where he was a silver medalist in the 4 x 100 metre relay; a quarter finalist in 200 metres at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta; a Pan American Games team member and a three-time World University Games team member. William (Bill) Seagris (‘92, ‘96, ‘97), to be inducted into the Athlete category. Bill Seagris made significant contributions to men’s varsity golf and hockey during his student career at the University of Windsor. He was awarded the Olympic Shield as Male Athlete of the Year for golf in 1993/94 and was named team MVP for each of the four years he was a golf team member. In Ontario inter-university golf, Seagris was the only golfer in history to capture the Len Shore Memorial Trophy as individual champion for three consecutive years and lead the Lancers to three Ontario University Team Golf Championships in 1989, 1993 and 1994. He represented the University of Windsor at the World University Golf Championships at the Old Course of St. Andrews and earned a top-15 finish and continued to devote his time to Lancer sports serving as an assistant coach for its golf and hockey programs after graduation. Kelly (Dinsmore) Soulliere (‘94, ‘95), to be inducted into the Athlete category. Soulliere was a Lancer Track and Field team member throughout her university career, setting school records in long jump, triple jump, 4 x 200 m relay, and 4 x 400m relay. She is the only athlete in University of Windsor history to receive the Banner Shield four times as top female athlete and was a four-time track and field MVP. Soulliere led the Lancers to five consecutive OUA team titles, was named First Team All-Star in 19 events and holds OUA records in long jump, triple jump and 4 x 400m relay. She was a five-time All-Canadian , a two-time CIAU Track and Field Athlete of the Year and established the CIAU triple jump record as the first Canadian female ever to jump 13 metres. Soulliere was a World Indoor Championship national team member, a World University Games national team member, and was twice a finalist for the Howard Mackie Award as Canada’s Outstanding Female University Athlete. The new Sport Achievement Award was established to recognize alumni who have achieved greatness in sport, other than as a participant of a Purple Raider or Lancer sport team. Roy Battagello (‘52), to be inducted into the Sport Achievement category. Battagello was an avid football player during his student days at Windsor Vocational School and Assumption College and was named Outstanding Athlete of the Forties. As a member of the first AKO football team he led his team to the 1947 Provincial Championship and was named to the University of Western Ontario and London Free Press Leader’s Club as an outstanding Western Ontario athlete for his efforts in football, basketball, track and field and swimming. Battagello played football for the Ottawa Rough Riders followed by a 40-year career in education where he coached football, basketball and track and field and retired as principal of W.D. Lowe Secondary School. He was founding president of the Windsor Headmasters’ Association and held various executive positions with the Ontario Secondary Schools Federation. In 1992, Battagello was the recipient of the Canada 125 Commemorative Medal for educational and civic contributions to the community. Godfrey Janisse (‘60), to be inducted into the Sport Achievement category. Janisse has served in several coaching and assistant coaching capacities for Lancer football, OFSSA track and field and Assumption High School baseball and was head of the Boys’ Physical Education program at both Herman and Massey Secondary Schools. Janisse has devoted nearly 40 years to coaching local high school and AKO junior football teams. William (Bill) Pataky (‘57), to be inducted (posthumously) into the Sport Achievement category. Pataky played both football and basketball for the Assumption College Purple Raiders and was a member of Red Nantais’s Freshmen Five basketball team where he was named an All-Star in football and basketball. He played on the 1952 Canadian Olympic basketball team and was the University of Western Ontario’s top basketball scorer during the 1951-52 season. Pataky was also an accomplished baseball player in Windsor and Sudbury, batting .429 during the 1949-50 season when he played semi-professional baseball for the Windsor Sterlings. John Upham (‘71), to be inducted in the Sport Achievement category. Following six years in professional baseball Upham followed a career in teaching and coaching at the high school level. He has coached several local and provincial baseball teams over the past 25 years including the Young Canada Games Boys’ baseball team; the Senior Canadian Windsor Chiefs; the National Youth Team Canada; the 1988 Canadian Olympic Team; the Korea and World Championships; and the Canadian Pan American Games team. The Team Achievement Award recognizes Purple Raider and Lancer Teams which have won a Provincial Championship and/or competed with distinction at the highest level of intercollegiate competition available at that time.
