The event takes place from noon until 5 p.m. at St. Paul's United College on the UW campus, off Westmount Road North. "Honouring Our Future Leaders" is the theme of the powwow, which celebrates Aboriginal culture and promotes cultural awareness. The event creates a sense of community for native students at the university and welcomes new and returning students to UW. "We walk a delicate balance between retaining our traditional cultural values and practices and living in a modern society," said Jean Becker, Aboriginal Services Co-ordinator. "It's something we have to negotiate every day. The powwow can bridge between these two worlds." The event is organized by UW Aboriginal Student Services and SUNDANCe: a university-based group of staff, students, faculty from UW, Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Guelph, as well as community representatives. Besides the beat of the big drums, traditionally played by men, the powwow will feature the UW women's hand drum group. Vendors will offer food and crafts. General admission is $5. Admission for children under 10 and people over 60 is free. Proceeds will go to a bursary for Aboriginal students at UW, WLU and the U of G. For those attending a powwow for the first time, an etiquette guide is available at www.powwow-power.com/powwowetiquette.html Contact: Jean Becker, UW Aboriginal Services Co-ordinator, (519) 885-1465, ext. 209; j2becker@uwaterloo.ca John Morris, UW Media Relations, (519) 888-4435; jmorris@uwaterloo.ca Release no. 207 -- September 21, 2005
