Architect Brigitte Shim to present 2005 Pratt Lecture, Sept. 26

SACKVILLE, NB — Mount Allison University’s annual Pratt Visiting Artists Lecture will be held on Monday, September 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the Brunton Auditorium, in the Marjorie Young Bell Music Conservatory and will feature Shim-Sutcliffe architect Brigitte Shim. Her talk is entitled “Building Context” and everyone is welcome to attend.

Brigitte Shim’s rich experiences as an architect include her partnership in the firm Shim-Sutcliffe and her teaching at universities in Canada, Europe, and the United States. Along with her current position at the University of Toronto, she has held visiting professorships at the École Polytechnique Federal de Lausanne, Yale University’s School of Architecture, and Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design.

With partner and collaborator, Howard Sutcliffe, Brigitte has created a firm and a life around a shared passion for architecture, landscape, and furniture. The pair’s interest in the construction and fabrication of buildings, sites, and their intersections has forced them to question fundamental relationships between object and ground, building and landscape, man and nature.

The Mary (West) Pratt and Christopher Pratt Visiting Artist Lectures are supported by an endowment established by Mount Allison University’s Class of ’57 in recognition of their classmates Mary (West) Pratt and Christopher Pratt. The lecture is also supported by the Marjorie Young Bell Distinguished Visitors Fund. These annual lectures explore the role of art in the human experience.

A reception will follow the lecture at the Owens Art Gallery, Mount Allison University campus.
