September 20, 2005 Source: University of Toronto: http://www.news.utoronto.ca/bin6/050920-1642.asp Experts to tackle anti-violence strategies in schools Conference participants include students, parents and educators Sep 20/05 by Sonnet L’Abbé (about) (email) Leading academics and education experts will seek solutions to mediating conflict among students, preventing violence in elementary schools and devise anti-racism and anti-bullying strategies during a full-day conference at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto (OISE/UT), 252 Bloor St. W., beginning Saturday, Sept. 24 at 9 a.m. At the Safe Schools for All: Peacemaking Education conference, 35 workshops on diverse topics such as dealing with cyberspace bullying, alternative approaches to suspension, anti-homophobia strategies and countering violence and racism in schools will be attended by students, parents and educators. Speakers will include representatives from the Safe Schools Network who will demonstrate how animation techniques can help students learn to be more empathetic and co-operative as well as a representative from Toronto police who will present ideas on how to reduce youth violence and victimization in schools. The interactive sessions will also focus on various grade levels within the public education system. MPP Liz Sandals, chair of the Safe Schools Action Team (a collaboration between the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services) will provide introductory remarks at 9 a.m. The conference is sponsored by OISE/UT Student Services.
