Carleton’s Student Newspaper Turns 60

(Ottawa)--The Charlatan, Carleton University’s independent student newspaper, is turning 60. To mark the milestone, the entire Carleton and greater Ottawa community is invited to a week of events starting with a barbecue Thursday Sept. 22.

MP Ed Broadbent, Councillor Clive Doucet and Carleton President David Atkinson will join the Charlatan editorial staff at Mackenzie Field (outside the Architecture Building) at 12 noon to serve all those who attend hamburgers, hot dogs and a vegetarian alternative. The campus radio station CKCU will broadcast live from the barbecue. An art exhibit featuring photos from every decade the Charlatan has published will open in Mike’s Place (second floor of the University Centre at Carleton University).

On Friday Sept. 23, a book about the paper’s tumultuous 60-year history will be launched by former Features Editor Evan Annett. Mr. Annett will launch his book at 7:00 p.m. in the Humanities Lounge inside Paterson Hall. Joe Boughner, 2004-05 Charlatan Editor-in-Chief, will introduce Mr. Annett who will make a short address before taking questions.

On Saturday Sept. 24, Charlatan alumni will return to host workshops for aspiring journalists starting at 11 a.m. in the Tory Egg (room 360).

At 8:00 p.m., alumni and the paper’s volunteers will gather at Oliver’s (first floor University Centre) for a party celebrating the paper’s anniversary.

Ottawa MPP Jim Watson, a former Charlatan writer, will throw out the first pitch at the annual staff vs. alumni softball game on Sunday Sept. 25 at Brewer Park. A brunch for alumni at the Residence Grille (Residence Commons) will precede the game.

On Monday Sept. 26, the paper will host a town hall meeting titled “Why don’t you care?” The event will feature Councillor Clive Doucet and leaders of Carleton’s student associations. The panelists will debate why students have not been more engaged in the political process. The meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the Azrieli Theatre (room 302).

On Tuesday Sept. 27, the paper will host an Open Mic night at Mike’s Place. Students are invited to come out and read the funniest and most outrageous comments ever called into the Charlatan’s famous answering machine known as Voicebox.

The week is capped on Wednesday Sept. 28 when the paper will hand out free birthday cake in Baker Lounge (fourth floor, University Centre).

The media are welcome to cover any of the above events.
