Concordia’s Sustainability Office is taking advantage of this occasion to launch Concordia’s new Transportation Demand Management program, called allégo Concordia. Allégo Concordia is about smarter transport for a more sustainable future, which means finding alternative ways to get to and from campus, promoting the efforts of those who do, and encouraging the development and use of fuel-efficient vehicles and bicycle facilities, among others. The goal is to promote the culture of sustainability and highlight the many benefits of alternates to single car commuting. On Car Free Day, volunteers will be on both the Sir George Williams and Loyola campuses. They will be distributing information related to transportation and promotional materials for allégo Concordia. An initiative of Montreal’s Agence Métropolitaine de Transport, allégo! is a program to encourage more economically and environmentally-friendly methods of transportation. The program was launched at Concordia in 2005, when the Sustainability Coordinator assembled a multi-stakeholder committee to guide its development. A comprehensive survey of the campus community’s commuter habits was completed, alongside an accessibility profile and an assessment of bicycle security systems at the SGW campus. Throughout this coming year, allégo Concordia will be developing transportation information stations, a carpooling program, a guaranteed ride home (GRH) program, fuel economy calculators, a comprehensive website and more.
