In order to contribute to the development of technology skills in Canada and strengthen its ties with Canadian communities, TCS will work closely with York academics to advance students’ technology skill set and create jobs for Canadian graduates. As part of the TCS-York University alliance, York students will gain exposure to TCS’ mature processes, technologies and tools already in place. Not only will York students have the opportunity for hands-on participation in current TCS projects, but top York students and TCS researchers will also be able to share knowledge, skills and experiences. “York University is very proud to be working with TCS, a global technology leader, in establishing this program. This relationship will give our students the advantage of an extraordinary international learning experience - one that will help shape tomorrow’s global leaders,” commented Dr. Lorna Marsden, President and Vice-Chancellor, York University. Together, York University and TCS will engage in joint research initiatives and offer student work opportunities. As part of the MOU, they will launch the TCS Global Internship Awards Program, designed to recognize and engage top computer science and engineering students. The first group of students will begin working in TCS offices around the world in 2006 (summer). According to a presentation in April 2004 by Dr. Michael R. Bloom, director of education and learning for The Conference Board of Canada, “Canada is behind proportionately in science, mathematics and technology. [There are] major shortages in skilled trades [and] strong international competition for highly skilled graduates.” “TCS is very excited to be working with York University. Our goal is to help Canadian students to return to their community with an enhanced skill set, ultimately allowing them to pass on their new knowledge to others,” said Mukesh Gupta, director of strategic relations at TCS Canada. “York University is home to more than 50,000 students and 180,000 alumni worldwide. Creating an alliance with such a large and internationally prestigious university enables us to tap and train top minds and future leaders.” “TCS is committed to communities across the globe,” said Surya Kant, president of TCS North America. “Our support of York University is an example of how we dedicate resources to helping and meeting the demands of surrounding communities. By engaging our effective near-shore capabilities and resources in Canada, we feel that this alliance will enable us directly address the region’s need to bridge the skills gap.” About York University York University is the leading interdisciplinary research and teaching university in Canada.
