Mount Allison welcomes alumnus back as Crake Drama Graduate in Residence

SACKVILLE, NB — Bruce McKay, a Sackville native and graduate of both Mount Allison University and the National Theatre School, is the 2005-06 Crake Drama Graduate in Residence.

Supported by the J. E. A. Crake Foundation, this project allows students to meet and engage with Allisonians who have achieved success in what Alex Fancy, director of drama, calls “the perillous and unpredictable world of theatre.” He adds that the yearly visitors “provide a huge boost to the drama program, the Windsor Theatre, and the quality of the Mount Allison learning experience.”

McKay, a member of CAEA and ACTRA, lives in Saskatoon where he performs, in both English and French, with Persephone Theatre, Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan, la Troupe du Jour and others. He has also acted for film and CBC Radio, and has toured extensively, particularly in Western Canada.

At Mount Allison he studied drama and French, and began his acting career with Tintamarre, the University’s bilingual theatre company that works out of the Windsor Theatre. During his stay at Mount Allison he will work with students in acting and dramatic literature classes, help students to prepare auditions, run workshops, meet students on a one-to-one basis, and also give an introductory presentation that will be of wide public interest.

The presentation, entitled “How I Got There From Here,” is scheduled for Monday, September 19 at 4:30 p.m. in the Windsor Theatre (University Centre). Admission is free.

McKay will also present, in the Windsor Theatre on Friday, September 30 (8 p.m.) and Saturday, October 1 (2 p.m. and 8 p.m.) the Canadian classic, “Life After Hockey” by Kenneth Brown, which features Rink Rat Brown, a husband and father who likes to escape to the world of the outdoor rink and his hockey fantasies.

Tickets for “Life After Hockey” ($15; $8 for students) can be obtained at the Windsor Theatre (364-2234) or at Live Bait Theatre (536-2248; toll free 1-888-655-2248). At McKay’s request proceeds will be given to Live Bait Theatre and to Tintamarre.
