New University Research Chairs announced at University of Ottawa

OTTAWA, September 13, 2005 — The University of Ottawa is proud to announce two new University Research Chairs and the newest Research Chair in Canadian Francophonie.

Research Chair on La Francophonie
Nathalie Bélanger - Faculty of Education

Nathalie Bélanger studies minorities, French-Language education and the question of difference, and the Francophone educational milieu in Ontario.

Minority French-language schools are notoriously plagued by recruitment and retention problems. Professor Bélanger plans to examine points of view specifically expressed by school children and their parents regarding inclusion and the academic experience in the context of minority French-language schools. The project has two principal objectives. The first is to identify which parents participate – and the manner in which they participate – jointly with the main academic players in decisions concerning their children. The second is to examine what the schoolchildren themselves have to say about the matter of difference and their needs in francophone communities.

The University of Ottawa is committed to the promotion of Francophone communities. In designing outstanding programs and services for Ontario's French-speaking population, it provides leadership for Francophone communities across Canada and around the world. The Research Chairs in Canadian Francophonie program aims to solidify the position of the University of Ottawa as a leader in the field of research on Canadian and North-American francophonie.

University Research Chair
Marie-Blanche Tahon – Department of Sociology

During the past 25 years, the sociology of family has expanded significantly. Bill 84 creating civil union and the new laws governing filiation, which was passed by the Quebec National Assembly in 2002, and Bill C-38, which defines marriage as the union of two persons, suggest a need for a fresh look at the laws governing the family.

Professor Tahon’s research will examine sociological and anthropological indicators leading to an understanding of the modern family, take a socio-anthropological approach to family with regard to both gender and sexual equality, and take a fresh look at filiation as the customary means of entry into society (via civil union, which inevitably is secular).

Marie-Blanche Tahon is the author of a number of articles and publications. Among other works, she is the author of La famille désinstituée.

University Research Chair
Paola Flocchini - School of Information Technology and Engineering

Environmental security problems in distributed systems such as the Internet have reached a crisis point. Embedded “cookies” and spyware are the main threats to the stability of modern communications networks.

Paola Flocchini is internationally renowned for her exemplary work in the area of mobile computing. She has made a significant contribution to the environmental security of networks threatened by computer viruses, spy ware and harmful hosts. Professor Flocchini is particularly interested in practical applications and the evolution of communications technologies. Aided by ongoing technical contributions, by the international scope of her research, and by numerous sources of research support, her current research on mobile agents holds great promise for the development of efficient methods (currently non-existent) of combating the spread of intrusive agents. It is a first, important step toward decontaminating and stabilizing network environments.

The University of Ottawa has established 25 University Research Chairs (URC) to be awarded between 2003 and 2005. These chairs are established to recognize outstanding accomplishments in research by our professors who maintain a solid teaching record, and to provide financial support for research programs of the awardees.
