CHARLES FORAN KICKS OFF 2005-2006 READING SERIES AT UNB SAINT JOHN

Patty O'Brien, Information Officer (506) 648-5707

Novelist Charles Foran will kick off the 2005-2006 Lorenzo Society Reading Series at the University of New Brunswick Saint John on September 22 when he reads from his captivating new novel, Carolan’s Farewell.

Based on the life of Terence Carolan, a legendary blind composer and harper who traveled the 18th-century Irish countryside, it tells the story of his journey by horseback through Donegal County in the company of his faithful guide, bibliophile and sometime-thief of books, Owen Conner. Told through a series of conversations, mishaps, and adventures, master and servant reminisce on their quixotic friendship of twenty-one years in this tender and beautifully written book.

Charles Foran is the author of Kitchen Music (1994), Butterfly Lovers (1996), House on Fire (2001) and the non-fictional works Sketches in Winter: A Beijing Postcript (1992), The Last House of Ulster: A Family in Belfast (1995) and The Story of My life (so far) (1998). Nominated for a Governor-General’s Award, The Last House of Ulster won the QSpell Award. Butterfly Lovers similarly won the QSpell, and Kitchen Music was a finalist for the Books in Canada First Novel Award. An award-winning author and journalist, Foran produces radio documentaries for the CBC’s Ideas.

Charles Foran will read from Carolan’s Farewell on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 7 pm at the Ganong Hall Lecture Theatre. The reading is hosted by the Lorenzo Society and the UNB Saint John Bookstore. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend. For more information contact The University Bookstore at (506) 648-5540 or e-mail sjbooks@unbsj.ca. The Lorenzo Reading Series gratefully acknowledges the support of the Canada Council of the Arts.
