October 7, 2005 Source: University of Waterloo: http://newsrelease.uwaterloo.ca/news.php?id=4605 Higgins lecture airs on TVOs Big Ideas Oct. 15 WATERLOO, Ont. -- The TVOntario program Big Ideas has announced the broadcast dates for its Best Lecturer Competition, with Michael W. Higgins, President of St. Jerome's University, slated as the second lecturer on Oct. 15. Higgins, who is cross-appointed in the Departments of English and Religious Studies, has entitled his lecture "Holiness: An Antidote to Evil." The program, which is hosted by Irshad Manji, airs at 1 p.m. and is rebroadcast on Oct. 16 at the same time. The series of lectures begins this Saturday (Oct. 8) and presents two lectures each week until Nov. 5. Viewers are invited to vote for the individual who best demonstrates clarity and coherence, energy and performance, and confidence and authority. Higgins is one of 10 post-secondary educators selected by columnist Robert Fulford, playwright Andrew Moodie and Literary Review of Canada editor Bronwyn Drainie from more than 350 nominees. Other lecturers include Rob Bowman (York), Michael Collins (Toronto), Paul Delaney (York), Megumi Harada (Toronto), Arne Kislenko (Ryerson), Brian Little (Carleton), Dan McIntyre (Carleton), Michael Persinger (Laurentian), and Warren Thorngate (Carleton). The selection of Ontario's best lecturer will be left to viewers, who can register their choice by telephone (1-886-281-3536) or online (www.tvo.org/bigideas). The winning lecturer's university or college will receive a $10,000 scholarship sponsored by TD Meloche Monnex. Higgins has been President of St. Jerome's University -- a Roman Catholic University federated with the University of Waterloo -- since 1999. He has authored or co-authored My Father's Business: a Biography of His Eminence G. Emmett Cardinal Carter (1990), The Jesuit Mystique (1995), the award-winning Heretic Blood: The Spiritual Geography of Thomas Merton (1998), The Muted Voice: Religion and the Media (2000), and the best-selling Power and Peril: The Catholic Church at the Crossroads (2002).
