The lectures will take place in Art Gallery II from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and the series is open to the community. Free admission and refreshments. This year’s series includes: Tuesday, October 11: The Myth and the Reality Guest lecturer Brian McNeill Scottish multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and author Brian McNeill explores issues relating to Scotland’s self-perception and how real it is, with particular emphasis on the music. Wednesday, October 12: Liz Doherty in Conversation with Donegal county fiddle master Dinny McLaughlin Following the publication of Dinny McLaughlin: A Life of Music, Song and Dance in Inishowen in March 2005, author Liz Doherty will talk with Dinny about his life as a professional musician and music teacher in north Donegal. Dinny has toured and recorded with Aileach, one of the leading Irish music bands of the ‘70’s and 80’s and has taught many of today’s leading musicians and dancers including Ciaran Tourish and Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh of the group Altan. A born storyteller, this will be an enjoyable and informative glimpse into the life and times of one of the great masters of the Irish tradition. Thursday, October 13: One Foot on Either Side of the Chasm: Gaelic Language in Cape Breton Pop Music Guest Lecturer Heather Sparling Heather Sparling is Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology at Cape Breton University whose current research addresses Gaelic song genre definitions, uses and vales in Cape Breton. A flute player with experience in classical, Baroque and folk ensembles, she has also taught Gaelic in Toronto. Friday, October 14: Traditions of Our Forebears: Foundations for the Future Guest Lecturer: Margaret Bennet Scottish Gaelic singer, folklorist and scholar Margaret Bennett will present a lecture on Scottish customs from the cradle to the grave. The series is offered through support from Cape Breton University, the Centre of Cape Breton Studies (CBU), Canada Research Chair in Intangible Culture, and SSHRC. On Tuesday, October 11, the famed Men of the Deeps take the stage at the Boardmore Playhouse. "When Coal Was King" also features Kathryn Ticknell, a Northumbrian small pipes player. The show will be hosted by singer/songwriter Wally MacAulay and the Cape Breton University Alumni Association will host an intermission break in the Campus Centre Foyer. Tickets are available at the Boardmore Playhouse for this Celtic Colours concert (563-1339).
