http://www.mun.ca/marcomm/news/index.php?includefile=showitem.php&id=911 Internationally-recognized poet, typographer and cultural historian to deliver Pratt Lecture at Memorial The 2005 Pratt Lecture will feature Robert Bringhurst, internationally-recognized poet, typographer, cultural historian, linguist and true Renaissance man with a lecture titled The Silence That Is Not Poetry and the Silence That Is. The lecture will he held on Friday, Oct. 14, at 8 p.m.in the Reid Theatre, Arts and AdministrationBuilding. Members of the general public are invited to attend. There is no admission charge and free parking is available in Area 15, across from the Schoolof Music. A reception will follow in the University Club, 5th floor, Arts and AdministrationBuilding. Robert Bringhurst is the recent recipient of the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Literary Excellence. Known primarily as a poet, he has published more than 30 books including The Calling: Selected Poems 1970-1995 and Pieces of Map, Pieces of Music. His book, The Black Canoe is a classic in the study of Native American art history and his book The Elements of Typographic Style has become one of the most influential texts on typographic design. In Canada, Dr. Bringhurst is best known for authoring and translating a groundbreaking study of Native Canadian oral literature, The Classical Haida Mythtellers and their World, a work in three volumes including A Story as Sharp as a Knife and Nine Visits to the Myth World, the latter short-listed for the 2001 Griffin Poetry Prize. His latest book, The Solid Form of Language (2004), examines the creative tensions between oral language and written script.
