October 6, 2005 Source: Laurentian University of Sudbury: http://www.laurentian.ca/?file=newsrelease/2005/oct/oct6_engineering_e.php Initiative seeks to attract young women to pursue a career in engineering In an effort to attract more young women to the engineering profession and thus meet the projected demand for engineers in the next five to ten years, a new province wide initiative, entitled GO Eng Girl, will take place in every university engineering school across the province on Saturday, October 15. The Sudbury event, presented by Laurentian's School of Engineering , will run from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the University's Great Hall. Female grade 7 to 10 students and their parents are invited to attend. Activities will be offered in English and French. Admission and parking are free. The GO Eng Girl! program is coordinated by Ontario Women in Engineering with the support of the Council of Ontario Deans of Engineering and the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers. All faculties and schools of engineering are working together to encourage young women to study engineering and to make sure that old stereotypes of the profession are dispelled. On October 15, young female students in grades 7 to 10 and their parents will take part in GO Eng Girl! activities where they will be able to interact with engineers. A keynote presentation is scheduled for 10 a.m. Women professional engineers and engineering students will guide participants through hands on activities designed to make them aware of the wide range of undergraduate programs and careers available in the field of engineering. Students will also be informed of new initiatives being developed by Laurentian University in the areas of mechanical, electronic and computer engineering. There will be a mini trade show of displays from local companies employing female engineers. Participating students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who will take part in a separate program. Parents and guardians will gain information on student life and getting started at university, prerequisites for university studies, awards and scholarships, professional opportunities for engineers, life as an engineer, as well as other careers that can be accessed with an engineering degree. This project is supported locally and provincially by major corporations and organizations such as Inco, Falconbridge, Atlas Copco and the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Young women in grades 7 to 10 interested in participating in the GO Eng Girl! Program can register online at the following website: www.ospe.on.ca/goenggirl.
