Macdonald, R.R.C. will be brought to life during a inspiring public lecture at St. Francis Xavier University's Immaculata Hall on Tuesday, October 18th at 7:30 pm. Historian and president emeritus of York University Susan Mann will present "War and the Making of Margaret Macdonald." Mann will talk about this extraordinary woman who was born and raised in Bailey's Brook, Pictou County. After much perseverance Margaret Macdonald became Matron-In-Chief of Canada's overseas nursing service during the First World War. She was the first woman to hold the rank of major in the British Empire. Macdonald also served as a military nurse during the Spanish-American and Boer Wars and in Panama during the construction of the canal. In 1920, she had the distinction to be the second woman to receive an honorary degree from StFX. Susan Mann will touch on this and other aspects of Macdonald's fascinating life. Mann is a member of the Order of Canada and the author of Macdonald's biography. The presentation is being co-sponsored by StFX Dean of Arts Office, the History Department, the Women's Studies Program and the School of Nursing. The public is welcome.
