The European Language Portfolio and Its Potential for Canada workshop will be held in Edmonton from Oct. 12 to 14. It will be co-hosted by the Edmonton Public School Board. The objective is to address the feasibility within Canada of establishing a common way of measuring and tracking second and international language development and competence through a national language portfolio. Participants will study the European Language Portfolio. From there, they will discuss its relevance and applicability to Canada. Those involved will learn the European experiences, identify complementary endeavours in various Canadian jurisdictions, discuss the feasibility of implementing a similar portfolio in the nation and develop an action plan toward a Canadian Language Portfolio. The director of the SLEC is Sally Rehorick, the architect of the national workshop. Professor Rehorick is the Department of Canadian Heritage’s national observer to a project of the Council of Europe of the European Centre for Modern Languages in Austria on the European Language Portfolio. The Canadian effort ties in to a national study she completed for Canadian Heritage last year on strategies for a national approach to second language education (Plan 2013). Prof. Rehorick has invited European presenters who are experts in language portfolio design and implementations. There will also be several Canadian presenters at the workshop. Participants are drawn from a wide range of language interests including Canada’s two official languages, international and indigenous languages. They all represent language education from the young learner through adulthood. For further information view the SLEC website at http://www.unb.ca/slec. - 30 -
