This year marks the first in which the scholarship has been awarded to three recipients. "We were very impressed with the caliber of this year’s applicants and it was difficult to select just one candidate," said Don Desserud, Chair of UNB Saint John’s Department of History and Politics. "These students are three committed individuals who all have goals that go beyond their own personal gain." Lisa Pearl Bouthillier is a wife and mother of three daughters who wants to inspire and challenge students to love learning as much as she has. "I aspire to be a teacher that doesn’t just teach information but also teaches students how to think critically and apply what they are learning to their everyday and future experiences," explains Bouthillier. Kiiza Andrew Odwedo is an international student who cares as much about the welfare of global citizens as he does about his academic excellence. In the words of one instructor, "He is actively engaged in community development and humanitarian work that benefits people from the developing world." Mr. Odwedo intends to pursue communications, international relations and academia. Jane Sears is entering her fourth year at UNB Saint John as an honours major in political science. She plans to write her thesis on international development with a particular emphasis on the environment. She would like to apply her skills and talents with a non-governmental organization at the international level following her completion of a Masters of Arts. The political science program at UNB Saint John trains students to analysze how and why governments make decisions and to assess the impact those decisions have on populations in Canada and around the world. The Sandra Irving Scholarship is an annual scholarship open to politics majors at UNB Saint John and academic standing, career aspirations and a personal statement are all taken into consideration by the selection committee. The $5,000 scholarship is named for the donor, a UNB Saint John Political Science graduate, who created the award.
