Already in use in many North American cities, 10-digit local dialling is being introduced because of the heavy demand for new phone numbers and to provide standardized local dialling across neighbouring regions, said Jim Lennie, associate director for Computing and Communications Services. To ensure a seamless transition, businesses and consumers are encouraged to start making the necessary changes right away by adding the appropriate area code to programmed numbers on all their telecommunications devices and also ensuring that their security or alarm systems are compatible with 10-digit local dialling. For those publishing materials that include telephone and/or fax numbers, remember to remove the brackets surrounding the area code because it will no longer be optional. The University's number should appear as 519 824-4120.
