In 1998, Jane Doe successfully sued the Metro Toronto Police for violating her Charter rights by not notifying her that she could be a possible target of a serial rapist. In a landmark ruling, a judge agreed police had used her as human bait to catch a sexual predator - the so-called Balcony Rapist - and awarded her $220,000. Her case established Canadian legal precedent and shifted social and legal attitudes regarding crimes of sexual violence and female identity. The talk is scheduled in the Alumni Theatre in Southam Hall. It is free and open to the public but seating is limited. The Florence Bird Lecture is held annually and is organized by the Pauline Jewett Institute of Women's Studies at Carleton University. It highlights a prominent Canadian women and her contribution to her respective field. -30- For more information: Lalita Figueredo Institute Administrator Pauline Jewett Institute of Women's Studies (613) 520-6645 |
