October 4, 2005 Source: Carleton University: http://www.carleton.ca/duc/News/news10040501.html Carleton University To Open New Learning Commons for Students on October 6 (Ottawa)--Carleton University Provost and Vice-President (Academic) Alan Harrison is delighted to announce the grand opening of Ottawa’s first Learning Commons located in Carleton’s MacOdrum Library on Thursday, October 6, 2005, at 3:00 p.m. in the Library. Media are cordially invited to attend this event. "This is the latest demonstration of our commitment to ensure academic success and an outstanding university experience for all our students," says Dr. Harrison. The Learning Commons is basically a one-stop-study–shop for students, comprising special meeting spaces, library, IT, and learning support services under one roof. Some of the key features include: Centralized access to essential learning support services such as the Student Academic Success Centre, the Math Tutorial Centre, Writing Tutorial Services, and the Peer Assisted Study Sessions program; Research help and guidance through the Library’s impressive hard copy and digital collections; Meeting and study spaces of varying sizes as well as a presentation room for 45 people; Unique wireless network throughout the Library; 160 new computers and modern work stations; New laptop lending program within the Library with 50 new machines; IT help for computer account, networking, printing, and software questions.Dr. Harrison notes that centralizing all of these services on campus "will significantly enhance the learning environment for Carleton students. We expect it also to increase demand for the services, especially those providing learning support, and we have committed additional ongoing funding to meet this increased demand."
