Normally a conventional concert, with the intent of airing works by Canadian composers and gathering financial support from patrons, the event this year will work slightly differently. The ‘concert,’ perhaps better described as ‘a series of events’ will begin at Struts Art Gallery, Lorne Street at 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. The first event will be an electronic composition by Sackville resident and Mount Allison music professor Dr. Ian Crutchley. Then the show will proceed to the Sackville Bandstand for a downtown performance by Drumba, a local percussion ensemble led and instructed by CMC office manager Shawn Bostick. The next event will take place in the more traditional atmosphere of Brunton Auditorium, featuring piano repertoire by Halifax native Emily Doolittle and St. Francis Xavier music professor Anthony Genge. The afternoon will conclude at the Mount Allison Pub (located in the University Centre) with some Canadian composition in action — improvisation by Five Guys. The aim of this event is to bring the Canadian Music Centre and Canadian composition out into the public where anyone and everyone might see it, along the lines of the New Music in New Places project (www.musiccentre.ca/nmi.cfm). Also, the Atlantic branch hopes to emphasize the variety of venues for contemporary Canadian composition in the town of Sackville, and the variety of forms that musical activity may assume. By moving the concert out and about in public spaces, the CMC wishes to promote the organization as an accessible resource for a diverse range of musicians and music appreciators, from youth to students to professionals. The Canadian Music Centre acts at a pre-publishing agent for producing, promoting, and distributing the work of Canadian composers. All works performed will be by Canadian composers, featuring several from or residing in Sackville and the Atlantic Provinces. Donations will be accepted at both Struts Art Gallery and the Mount Allison Pub. A reception will follow the event. —30— For more information please contact the Atlantic Region of the Canadian Music Centre, tel: 536-4263 (atlantic@musiccentre.ca).
